I'm a King James Bible believing sinner saved by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ! I was raised by a good mother and I went to a KJV church growing up. I am a mother of 5 lovely children, 2 grandchildren, and am married to a crazy Cajun for 28 years now! I think bow ties are cool, and grey hairs are like tinsle for your head. I admire those who do right no matter the cost, and wish to avoid those who would compromise the truth.
Sometimes the devil doesn't tempt us with evil; sometimes he allures us with good, distracts us with obligations, confuses us with compromise, or hinders us with business to keep us from that which is best- service to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Remember, the devil always offers his best, before Christ will offer His will for your life.

Comfort and Hope (poem)
When sorrow lingers and hearts feel torn,
Remember God’s promise: new mercies each morn.
Though loved ones are gone from the sight of your eyes,
Their souls find their rest where no shadow lies.
For His comfort will cradle each tear that you shed.
He holds every prayer, He knows every pain,
And in His great love, your hope will remain.
The grave has no victory, death has no sting,
For Christ is our life, our eternal King.
Your dear ones now walk in His radiant light,
Where joy has no end and day knows no night.
So lean on His promise, steadfast and true,
“I will never forsake or abandon you.”
Until heaven’s reunion makes all things complete,
Rest in His peace, and His love ever sweet.

The Lying Prophet
The Old Testament has many stories of prophets. There are some well known ones, like Elijah who called down fire from heaven, and some little known ones like Obadiah who has just one chapter with 21 verses detailing his prophesies.
There is one story that always makes me wonder. You can find it in I Kings 13:1-32:
In this story, we aren't even told the name of the prophet. We are just told that the Lord commanded him to take a message to King Jeroboam (the king to whom God gave most of the nation of Israel when he took the 10 Tribes from King Solomon's son).
I Kings 13:1-3- And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee. And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.
The story starts out pretty good. The prophet obeys the Lord, goes and delivers his message, and even receives divine protection from the Lord when Jeroboam gets angry and vindictive.
I Kings 13:4-9- And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him. The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.
The nameless prophet wouldn't go with Jeroboam because God had told him to go in one way and go out on a different path. He wasn't to eat or drink while he was there, he was only there to fulfill the directive.
I Kings 13:10- So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.
If only the story had stopped there! The prophet obeyed the command. He was told exactly what was expected of him by the Lord and he followed it to the letter.
Until....
I Kings 13:11-18- Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father. And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah. And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon, And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am. Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.
I always wondered why this older prophet would do that. He lied and destroyed the promising potential that we see in this nameless young man.
It's sad that this isn't the only time this happened. Many young Christians today get destroyed spiritually, and sometimes emotionally and psychologically, by older Christians. Instead of teaching the younger to read the Bible, pray, and listen and obey the Lord, they tell them what THEY expect of them. It is not their job to direct you in all matters of your spiritual life. They can counsel you, or advise you, but not control you. You are to learn to be obedient to God!
The older prophet lied, and the younger prophet should have realized this. The nameless prophet received instruction from the Lord, which should have been followed. The older prophet claims to have received his directions from an angel- that should ring warning bells!
Galatians 1:8- But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
Paul is warning his converts that they can be deceived, even by an angel. The devil is a fallen cherub. He was actually on a higher level than normal messenger angels. And, he can appear to be as godly as you need to get you to disobey God.
II Corinthians 11:13-15- For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
This young man was deceived because he didn't recognize a false prophet.
I Kings 13:19- So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.
The Lord allows us to make our own decisions. We have the capacity of choice, but that doesn't negate the consequences of those choices. The young prophet chose to listen to the older prophet instead of obeying his commission.
And now, he gets the notice of the consequences.
I Kings 13:20-25- And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back: And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee, But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers. And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back. And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase. And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.
Why the Lord didn't stop the old prophet, or punish the old prophet, has always bothered me. This man's decision and deceit were the reason the nameless prophet was killed. His entire life gone because he listened to someone who he decided was to be revered.
I also find it interesting that the Lord uses the old prophet to deliver the sentence for his actions. The prophet said, "You done messed up, and now you gonna die."
God took no time to mete out the judgment. He was killed by a lion not far from where he disobeyed. And, we know this is God's work because a lion doesn't hunt for sport, it hunts for food, but it doesn't eat the prophet's body nor his donkey; and the donkey doesn't run away from the lion!
I Kings 13:26-32- And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him. And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him. And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass. And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him. And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother! And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones: For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.
You can tell that the old man was sorry for his actions. But "sorry" can't erase consequences. He mourns for the young man that lost his life because of his deception, and gives him a right proper burial, but the nameless prophet is only mentioned one other time in Scriptures.
II Kings 23:16-18- And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount, and sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and polluted it, according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these words. Then he said, What title is that that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the sepulchre of the man of God, which came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of Bethel. And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.
The Lord's commissioned prophesy still came to pass. What God says will happen regardless of how his ministers act. But isn't it tragic that someone's entire ministry was cut short because of an old dishonest man of God?
We are not an island, and our actions and words have an impact on those around us.
Romans 14:7- For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
This story should give us two warnings-
- Don't just follow what an older Christian tells you to do; search out for yourself what God says on the matter.
- Be careful with how you interact with those around you; you never know who might be watching and listening. You might just destroy the walk of another if you aren't careful.
